Hours after Jodhpur nurse Bhanwari Devi was abducted on September l last year, allegedly at the behest of former Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna, one of her three abductors had informed her husband Amarchand that she had been strangled by them.
“Sohanlal Bishnoi, one of the three kidnappers-cum-killers of Bhanwari, had revealed to Amarchand hours after her abduction that they had strangled her. And yet, Amarchand had kept this information from investigators,” a CBI source said.
“Amarchand revealed nothing to the Jodhpur police even though he had approached them twice — first for filing a missing complaint on September 2 and then the FIR on September 5,” said the source.
Amarchand had allegedly been offered Rs 7 lakh by Luni legislator Malkhan Singh, an alleged co-conspirator, to ensure that “Bhanwari travelled alone on September 1”, said the source, adding Amarchand did not get the money, however.
The CBI arrested Amarchand for his alleged role in the conspiracy. The CBI and the Pune and Jodhpur police on Friday declared assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh for Bhanwari’s children. While felicitating the three probe teams, CBI director AP Singh described the case a complex one that had all the ingredients of Hollywood potboiler Sex, Lies, and Videotape’.
Singh gave a cash award of Rs 4 lakh to the Jodhpur police team and Rs 1 lakh to Pune police for their help in nabbing key accused Bishnaram Bishnoi.
