Once described as a party of traders, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is looking for a image change by inducting sports icons and businessmen in the party ranks.

Sources said the party is looking to induct more sportspersons and celebrities. “Party needs people from all backgrounds be it rural, urban or business. I am more of a futuristic person and will have more connect with urban voters, especially the youngsters,” said Rajpal, who runs a textile business.

The inclusion of Rajpal assumes significance in the wake of sources pointing out that the party may announce a fresh candidate list this time with some of the sitting MLAs being dropped. The party, however, is yet to announce its first list of candidates for the coming Delhi Assembly elections.

“I was not a politician but PM Narendra Modi has influenced me a lot. My younger brother has also joined the party and we hope to work for the party in a positive way,” Rajpal said.

After an internal survey, the Delhi BJP had claimed that majority of young voters are supporting it. “Our internal survey revealed that 58% young voters support BJP followed by AAP 23% and Congress 16%. Modi factor works well among the youth and his Make in India campaign and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan had a positive impact on them. We need people like Rajpal to take these campaigns to the young voters,” said a senior BJP leader.

Rajpal said he is in talks with corporate leaders to take forward the Swachh Bharat campaign.

“I want the corporates to adopt an area or a park and ensure cleanliness there. This will be a positive step,” he said.
