BJP on Friday condemned the "support" extended by HRD Minister Arjun Singh to the Jamia Milia Islamia University Vice-Chancellor's decision to provide legal aid to the students arrested on charges of terrorism.
"The shoulder of support being given by the state or an instrument of the state indicates social acceptability of the act of terror. We not only condemn but express concern over the minister's statement," party general secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters.
Jaitley, who was responding to Singh's statement in an interview that he was in support of the vice-chancellor's decision, claimed such a view acts as an incentive to people to commit acts of terror.
He said, "the vice-chancellor has expressed commitment to his university and his faith. Commitment to the Nation and the state should also find a place in this."
Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Mushirul Hasan had stated that the university would bear the cost of legal aid of its two students who were recently arrested by Delhi Police in connection with the Delhi blasts.
"An accused has a right to fight his case and the judiciary ensures legal aid. But for a central university to use government funds is objectionable," said Jaitley.
