BJP decides to stick with old team for MCD committees

Ahead of the municipal election in 2012, the BJP leadership in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to continue with the same team of councillors to head its various committees.

This was evident on Monday when Yogender Chandolia and Sarita Chaudhary filed their nominations for the post of chairman and deputy chairman of the standing committee respectively, while Mahender Nagpal filed for the post of education committee chief along with Bhupendra Gupta who filed papers to the post the committee's deputy.

Similarly, Naraian Singh filed nomination for the post of chairman of rural areas committee, while Kuldeep Singh Dagar filed nomination for its deputy chairman - all on the last day of filing nominations.

There are 13 special committees and 11 ad hoc committees in the MCD. Of these, barring three committees - for the community service department; the remunerative projects cell and the grievances cell - the party has decided to continue with the same team.

Said Subhash Arya, the leader of MCD House: "The team would remain unchanged in view of the municipal elections next year. On May 19, we are contemplating bringing a proposal in the House - the first for the House - wherein we would ratify the same team."

With a clear majority in the MCD House, the BJP is set get its way. It has 172 councilors out of the total 272 while the main opposition Congress has 73, while the rest are independent candidates or from BSP. The election for the two posts of standing committee will be held on May 16.
