The BJP demanded the resignation of Delhi Excise Minister A K Walia on Tuesday blaming him for the death of over 12 people in the city allegedly due to consumption of illicit liquor.
"The excise minister must resign as his department failed to keep surveillance on illicit liquor manufacturing units," senior BJP leader V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi.
Although official figure puts the death toll at 12, Malhotra claimed that 30 people have lost their lives in the last couple of days after consuming spurious liquor. Locals claimed 16 people residing in Raghubir Nagar in West Delhi died after consuming spurious liquor.
Malhotra said despite having a separate intelligence gathering unit, the Excise department has failed to control the liquor mafia as many "Congress workers also have links" to the business.
He also criticised Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for failing to take any action against the "liquor mafia".
"The Government had promised action after similar tragedies happened in the past. But no action was taken," Malhotra, also the leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, said.
He also demanded a judicial probe into the tragedy.
