NEW DELHI: A day ahead of the Delhi assembly’s special session to discuss the functioning of civic bodies, municipal councillors protested outside chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence after they were allegedly refused permission to meet him.

“Despite shortcomings, the civic bodies are providing exemplary service to the people of Delhi. It is really sad to note the man who vouched for Swaraj is today going all out to suppress the voice of the people. It will be better if the CM, instead of maligning the civic bodies, concentrates on improving water and power supply in Delhi,” said Subhash Arya, leader of the house, south Delhi municipal corporation.

The three municipal corporations, which are ruled by the BJP, have repeatedly accused the Delhi government of starving them of funds that led to repeated strikes by the staff over non-payment of salaries.

Ashish Sood, a councillor, said the members tried to meet the chief minister last year too but he did not even meet them at his Janta Darbar.

The BJP will try to corner the government in the Assembly. The party said the government should have found time to discuss other pressing issues and termed the discussion on civic agencies politically motivated.

Gupta said the BJP would move an adjournment motion on the bus aggregator scheme. “Instead of discussing the functioning of the three municipal corporations, the government must discuss its weak development agenda, unconstitutional functioning, efforts to kill democracy and inaction,” said Gupta.

Gupta said the opposition had given notice to the Delhi government for discussion, demanding action against people involved in the Rs 400 crore tanker scam, continued arbitrariness of public schools, irregularities in the premium bus service, non-refund of VAT, land pooling policy, disruption in supply of electricity and water and lack of development works in unauthorized colonies.

Gupta said the chief minister was focusing on Punjab, Goa and other states and he had no time for Delhi.
