Following the Bharat bandh call of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) patriarch LK Advani to protest the steep hike in petrol prices, the Delhi state unit of the party has called for a bandh in the Capital
“BJP workers will take to the streets to protest the steep price hike. Inflation has crossed all limits under the tenure of the Congress ruled United Progressive alliance. Delhiites are already beleaguered with the price hike and can’t afford increase in the prices of essential commodities any more,” said Delhi BJP president, Vijender Gupta.
The Leader of Opposition in Delhi legislative assembly Vijay Kumar Malhothra said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit should immediately abolish VAT on petrol. “At present a 20 per cent VAT is levied on petrol in Delhi. Through its abolition, the price can be brought down by R14 and petrol can be sold at R60 per litre,” Malhothra said.
Voicing the popular public sentiment against the hike in petrol prices, Vijay Goel, senior BJP leader said, “Prices of crude oil in international markets go both up and down but in our country, the government keeps increasing these rates on the logic that petroleum companies are incurring losses. This is totally unfair,” Goel said.
