The BJP was unmoved by Prime Minister Manmohan's letter to PAC Chairperson Murli Manohar Joshi expressing his readiness to appear before the panel and said if he is clean then he should not be "nervous" about facing a Joint Parliamentary Committee.

"Soon after the Prime Minister offered to appear before the Public Accounts Committee, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha had clarified the BJP stand that we are still firm on our stand for a JPC. The party stand remains the same today," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.

The Prime Minister today sent a letter to PAC Chairperson Murli Manohar Joshi, who is of BJP, expressing his readiness to appear before the panel if it so desired.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley had dismissed Singh's unprecedented offer to appear before a PAC, saying Caesar's wife cannot choose the forum which would decide who is guilty.

Hussain insisted that if the Prime Minister is not responsible for the 2-G spectrum scam, he should not be apprehensive about forming a JPC.

"If somebody is clean, why is there this nervousness to face a JPC," he asked.

He contended that PAC is not competent enough to look into all aspects of the Rs 1.76 lakh crore scam.

"The scope of this scam is such that only a JPC can deal with all aspects of it," Hussain said.

On December 20 at the Congress plenary here, Singh had said, "I sincerely believe that like Caesar's wife, the Prime Minister should be above suspicion and it is for this reason that I am prepared to appear before the PAC even though there is no precedent to that effect."
