Upping the ante against Gujarat governor Kamla Beniwal over the appointment of a Lokayukta in the state without consulting the state government, the BJP delegation led by LK Advani and leaders of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley submitted a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil demanding her recall.
The BJP's contention: as per the Constitution, the governor has to act on the advice of the council of ministers, except is some matters expressly mentioned therein.
While Patil sought to know if the matter was sub-judice, the delegation admitted it was, but insisted that the Centre could intervene to enforce constitutional propriety.
This happened after the Lok Sabha was adjourned for two hours (after Question Hour), and the Rajya Sabha many times, over the matter.
Govt hits back
The government blamed the BJP for hampering House functioning. HRD minister Kapil Sibal said the BJP was not allowing the House to function, attacking the party for hindering the passage of important bills.
The government also virtually ruled out the possibility of recall of the Gujarat governor for now. "Why should it be necessary for us to comment on it here or for them to disrupt Parliament? Are they (BJP) not confident of what the court will decide," law minister Salman Khurshid said.
