The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday emerged victorious in the North and East Delhi Municipal Corporations bypolls, in what the party claimed was the “semi-final to assembly elections” due later this year.

Buoyed by the victory of his party, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel on Tuesday said people in the National Capital have “rejected” Congress and demanded Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s resignation.

“It is referendum on Delhi government’s working. The writing is on the wall. People have rejected Congress and I am sure it would get a greater drubbing in the upcoming Assembly polls,” Goel said.

“The Chief Minister should immediately step down after this drubbing,” he added.

Goel said power and water tariff hike was one of the key issues in the election and Congress should take this defeat as a wake-up call to serve the people better. “If we come to power, we will reduce power tariff by 30%. We would soon come up with a 10-point programme to bring power tariff down in the national capital,” he said.

In Nangloi East (ward 43), first-timer Renu Shokeen of BJP emerged victorious, winning by a margin of 4,758 votes. She got 15,887 votes while her closest rival Ramesh Devi of Congress bagged 11,129 votes. In Yamuna Vihar (ward 256), Asha Tayal won with a margin of 4,317 votes after getting 13,123 votes while Congress candidate Sushila Agrawal managed only 8,806.The seat in Nangloi East was earlier held by Congress councillor Satyam Yadav, who died last year. The death of BJP councillor Vijay Bahal in February led to bypolls in Yamuna Vihar.

“The Sheila Dikshit government has lost the trust of people,” leader of opposition in Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra said.
