A visually challenged couple was robbed and murdered, allegedly by their tenants, at Vivek Vihar in East Delhi on Tuesday.
The police suspect two tenants, including a call centre employee, are responsible for the murders as they have gone missing since the incident.
The police said the victims were identified as Rajender Verma (52) and his wife Sudha (50). Both were residents of Janata Flats in Vivek Vihar.
Preliminary investigations revealed that while Verma was smothered, his wife was strangled with an electrical wire.
According to the police, the murders were discovered around 5 a.m. when one of the victims’ daughters called them.
“As no one picked up the phone, she got worried. She then called one of her parents’ neighbours, Amit Rana. He went to check and found the bodies. The house was open and the bodies were inside the bedroom. There was no sign of a break in suggesting a friendly entry,” said a senior officer.
The police said that the two tenants started living in the house of the victims a week back. One of them has been identified as Ashwini, who works at a call centre in Noida had apparently found the house with the help of woman.
They said the victims were not able to get the verification of the accused done.
“They were supposed to get it done but the accused apparently kept on delaying it. The victims lived on the ground floor while the suspects on the second floor,” added the officer.
During investigations, the police found that around 1 a.m., residents saw Ashwini smoking outside the house but they said that he apparently went missing later.
A family member of the victims said that R50,000 cash and some jewellery were missing from the house.
The police informed the three daughters, Hema, Anjali and Lalita, about the incident who immediately reached the spot.
The police said that they had detained the woman who was introduced the tenants to the victims.
