A fire at a garment factory in southwest Delhi’s Dabri claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman. Two of her colleagues suffered burns in the blaze. According to police, the fire broke out at the factory late in the night. Five fire-tenders were pressed into service for over two hours to douse the flames.

The woman who died in the fire was identified as Asha, a resident of Mahavir Enclave. She was employed at the factory as a labourer. Those injured in the incident are Mahadev, 30, and Jaipal, 28, also labourers at the factory.

“We received a call about the fire in the factory and five tenders were immediately dispatched to the spot. Around 1am, the fire was completely doused. Asha’s body was taken out of the factory. The injured were also rescued by the firemen,” an officer said, adding that the police have launched investigations. The officer said their initial investigations have suggested that the fire began because of an explosion in one of the boilers at the factory. The intensity of the blast probably caused extensive damage to the factory’s walls, he added.

Asha’s body was handed over to her family after post-mortem at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. She hailed from Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj and is survived by her husband and three children.

A case has also been registered over the incident at Dabri police station against the factory’s owner. The charge is of causing death by negligence under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code.

The second incident was reported from Laxmi Nagar in east Delhi around 11 pm on Friday. According to the fire department, the blaze was at a private office on Vikas Marg and four tenders were sent to douse the blaze. No injuries have been reported.
