What was supposed to be a harmless comment during a cricket match led to an eighth standard boy being shot at with a pellet gun inside the school premises in South Delhi on Wednesday.

The shocking incident at Veer Chandra Garhwal Senior Secondary School in Saket happened when a ninth standard student whipped out a pellet gun and shot at the victim when he allegedly commented on his batting style.

The accused was allegedly playing cricket during their physical education class. The victim, Gaurav Kumar, suffered minor injuries when he was shot on the shoulder with a pellet gun. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Center for treatment and was released after first aid.

According to the police, the victim Gaurav came out of his classroom on the pretext of having water and went straight to the playground.

“Gaurav allegedly started taunting the accused who was playing cricket there,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

One of Gaurav’s classmates, Rahul, said the two got into an altercation before the accused shot at the victim with his pellet gun. The accused ran away after climbing the wall," said Rahul.

Gaurav then went to his class teacher who took him to the vice principal of the school Prem Chand Sharma.

Sharma then called the police who took Gaurav to the hospital. The police said the accused was picked up from the Tigri area and the pistol was recovered from him. The weapon belonged to a friend of the accused.

“He has been previously involved in fights as well. We also recovered a knuckle duster from him. There have been instances when students from this school have been caught with surgical blades, knives and chains. We have received complaints regarding the students from this school earlier as well,” added the officer.

The police are yet to register a case in the matter as both the victim and the accused have retracted from their original statements.
