Brace for chilly New Year’s eve

Delhiites got a preview of the New Year’s Eve on Tuesday when the daytime temperatures in the city plunged because of rain during the day — conditions that are expected on December 31 as well. At 15.2 degrees, the maximum temperature on Tuesday dipped by seven degrees when compared with Monday’s 22 degrees.

According to the weatherman, Delhiites will also be able to enjoy the first day of the New Year as it is expected to be a clear sunny day without fog, which gave the city a miss on Tuesday because of the rainfall.

Rain gauges at the Lodhi Road observatory recorded 0.9 mm of rain during the course of the day. Shallow for may be seen in the city on Wednesday morning. The rainfall recorded on Tuesday was a result of the Easterly wave. “From Wednesday the effect of the Western Disturbance is also expected to reach the city. The interaction between the both will cause heavier rainfall,” Yadav said.

But Delhi is ready for a freezing yet fog-free New Year as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is expecting a clear day on December 31 and January 1. There is, however, bad news as well. Fog is expected to return to the city during the first week of January. “Once the Western Disturbance passes dense fog will be seen in the city,” he added.

“Rainfall is expected on Friday until afternoon, after which the sky is expected to clear. Though the temperature and the humidity will be conducive to fog on January 1, the wind speed is expected to be high, making the formation of fog difficult,” said BP Yadav, director, weather forecast, IMD.

“But the temperatures are expected to plunge around this time making days very cold,” he added.

Most weather forecast centres, globally, have also provided similar forecast for the coming week. Fog is formed when the humidity is high, usually around 100%, and the temperatures are low. Rainfall reduces the moisture in the air thereby reducing the chances of rainfall for that day. Wind speed also plays a role in fog formation.
