Brand Tihar makes its debut on fashion runway

About 550 women inmates at Tihar Jail were busy learning the nitty-gritty of fashion designing for the past six months. On Saturday, they got a chance to showcase their newly-acquired skills that will help them earn a livelihood later.

A collection of clothes designed by these women inmates was displayed at the fashion show as part of Women's Day celebrations on Friday.

"The costumes have been designed by the inmates as part of the course. These were showcased by models this time and hopefully, next year, the inmates themselves may participate in the show," said Sunil Kumar, chief PRO, Tihar Jail.

The fashion designing course was launched about six months ago and has about 550 women inmates enrolled for it.

"The inmates are very creative. This is an effort to make them stand on their feet, earn their livelihood with dignity and lead a normal life once they step out of jail," said Captain Jai Narain Prasad, Member of Parliament and former Union minister, who was the chief guest at the event.

Tihar jail which currently employs about 1100 people in a factory built on its premises which boasts of producing goods capable of competing with branded products in the market.

"We have a factory in Tihar jail which employs 1,100 people in which various kind of items are made ranging from furniture items to bakery products. Even the soap and detergents made in Tihar jail are very popular. The turnover was Rs 15 crore last year and this year it has been around Rs 30 crore and we expect it to be Rs 40 crore next year," said Kumar. He said a solar plant is also being installed in the jail.
