With just eight months to the Commonwealth Games this year, the Delhi government has put infrastructure projects on a fast track.

On Monday, the government’s public works department (PWD) opened one carriageway of a small bridge on Neela Hauz Lake at Aruna Asaf Ali Marg near Vasant Kunj. The other carriageway of the bridge is expected to open in March this year.

The department is also expected to open one carriageway of an underpass at Azadpur and the second carriageway of Naraina flyover in the next few days.

While inaugurating the part of the Neela Hauz bridge, Delhi PWD minister Rajkumar Chahaun said the project would ensure faster movement of vehicles between Vasant Kunj and central Delhi.

“Till the other carriageway (of the bridge) is opened, traffic of both the directions would ply on one carriageway,” said Chauhan.

“Once the bridge is complete, we will also restore the water body.”

The 325-metre long six-lane bridge also has a segregated lane for cyclists and has come up at a cost of Rs 34. 45 crore.

For better traffic management in the Capital, especially for the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government had taken up 17 new road and flyover projects.

While the department has already completed eight projects and have partially opened three, work on the remaining projects is going on at a fast pace, said a senior PWD official.

“We hope to complete most projects by June this year. The bigger projects like Ruing Road bypass, UP Link Road improvement and Shyam Lal College flyover will be complete by August this year,” he added.
