After claiming that 18 % of water supplied by Delhi Jal Board was contaminated, the MCD has now told students in 1,361 of its schools to bring their own water from home to ensure health safety.
MCD Education Committee Chairman Mahinder Nagpal said water purifiers are there in all these schools but the civic body does not want to take a chance. "If the water is very much contaminated, water purifiers may not be enough to make it totally fit for drinking. That is why we have issued such an instruction to students," he said.
In 50 of these 1361 schools, purifiers need repair, which will be done by MCD itself, he said.
The BJP leader said he has also written a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit seeking water supply for 36 MCD schools which have no water connection.
In view of reports of contamination, he has also urged the government to ensure regular cleaning of DJB tankers, Nagpal said.
The MCD health committee recently claimed that a survey conducted by it has found that 18 % of the water supplied by DJB are contaminated. Dikshit, who is the chairperson of the DJB, has rubbished the claim.
