Two siblings from the northeast were beaten up by their neighbours when they tried to stop them from clicking pictures. A representative from northeast community alleged that one of their neighbours also made videos of the girl who was living with her brother in a rented flat at Munirka in south Delhi.
“James (name changed), 30, and his sister Helen (name changed), 25, were beaten severely by a group of people at Babulal Chowk in Munirka around 11pm on Tuesday. James suffered severe head injuries and Helen on face, they were admitted at AIIMS Trauma Centre,” said Madhu Chandra, spokesperson of northeast helpline.
“We are verifying their claims and a case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station. No arrest has been made so far,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
“More than 10 people attacked James after they broke open the door of his rented accommodation,” Chandra added.
James works with a mobile service provider while his sister Helen works in a restaurant. They are living in the rented house for the past one year.
In another incident, two youngsters from the northeast identified as Thang, 21, and Mang, 24, were attacked by a group in Munirka market around 10pm on Tuesday. The victims alleged that they were buying groceries for dinner at a northeast shop when they heard shouts and scuffling.
“Some people were gathering outside. We stepped out and watched for a while when one guy approached us and suddenly hit Thang,” said Mang.
“Another person picked up a brick and threw it at us which I somehow managed to shield. I ran for cover, but Thang was attacked by a bunch of people. He managed to escape after sometime,” he added.
Both Mang and Thang are roommate. They are from Lamka in Manipur. “Munirka is marked with countless number of racial attacks on northeast people living in rented homes. The local police have totally failed to stop the violence and crimes against these people,” said Chandra.
