A 22-year-old business administration student of a private Delhi college was allegedly raped by a man who promised her to take her to London for higher studies and marry her.
The woman was also raped by the man’s brother, who promised to convince his sibling and parents for the marriage, police said.
A police officer said the woman approached the Mandawali police station and lodged a complaint against Sandeep Barnwal, a MBA graduate, and brother Hemant Barnwal.
The woman, who is from Jharkhand’s Bokaro, also alleged that despite promising her marriage, Sandeep wedded another girl in April 2012, as his demand of Rs 12 lakh as dowry was not met by her parents, the officer said.
The police, fully aware of the gravity of the case, registered a case of cheating, raping and demanding dowry against the brothers at the Mandawali police station on Wednesday.
A team of east Delhi police swooped down on Patna and arrested Hemant on Thursday.
“A look-out circular has been issued against Sandeep who flew to London, where he is an MBA student, after marrying another girl,” the officer said, adding the accused are distant relatives of the victim.
The woman, the officer said, had arrived in Delhi in 2009 for take MBA entrance tests. She stayed at Sandeep’s home as he was her only contact in Delhi. He convinced her to stay back in Delhi for pursuing MBA from a prominent institute.
“During her stay at his house in Pandav Nagar, Sandeep raped her after giving her soft drinks laced with sedatives and later promised her that he will marry her and take her to London for further studies. In March 2011, Sandeep’s brother raped her in the same house by promising her that only he can convince his brother and parents for marriage,” added the officer.
