Days after he carried out a robbery at the high security house of a businessman in Thiruvananthpuram, luck ran out for Bunty Chor.
On Saturday evening, 41-year-old Bunty, alias Devinder Singh, checked into Sai executive lodge at Maldhakka square near Pune railway station. Unfortunately for him, hotel owner Vijay Sharad Mane had seen his photo in Malyalam daily Matrubhumi.
He was the one who tipped off the police, said additional commissioner of police Chandrashekhar Daithankar.
"Our team picked up Bunty and recovered a laptop, a mobile phone and Rs 70,000 in cash," said Daithankar.
The recovered items were stolen from Kerala, said GV Nikam, inspector at Samarth police station, who had first detained him. On January 21, Bunty had broken into NRI businessman Venugopalan Nair's electronically secured house and made away with Mitsubhishi Outlander car worth Rs 28 lakh, two mobile handsets, jewellery, a Sony laptop and cash.
"After carrying out the Kerala operation, Bunty travelled to Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district, where he abandoned the stolen car. Over the next four days, he went to Belgaum (Karnataka) and Kolhapur (Maharashtra) and finally arrived in Pune by a Volvo bus," said Nikam.
