The south Delhi Police have managed to arrest the new leader of the burgle-and-burn gang that has been terrorising residents of government quarters in Sarojini Nagar, Pillanji and RK Puram.
According to the police, 21-year-old Suraj Kumar took over the mantle from Sanju following his arrest about a month ago.
Suraj, who became the new leader of the gang after the arrest of Sanju, was apprehended from Pillanji village in Sarojini Nagar.
"He is wanted in two burgle-and-burn cases in Sarojini Nagar in which three minors were apprehended earlier. Suraj, has previously been involved in several cases of burglary and loot. Like other members of the gang, he too is addicted to fluid, ganja and other drugs. We recovered 55grams of charas from him," said HGS Dhaliwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).
Suraj had taken over from the gang's leader Sanju, who is a notorious burglar-cum-arsonist involved in more than 1,500 cases of burglary and 100 cases of burglary-cum-arson in and around the Sarojini Nagar area of south Delhi.
He has been arrested six times before and put in juvenile homes. Every time, he used to escape.
Moreover, he took along boys whom he later recruited into the gang, which mostly comprises juveniles and targets the homes of government officials.
They then burn down the houses, which they think is the gang's signature as well as a way of not leaving any fingerprints behind.
