A 59-year-old businessman was shot at by unidentified assailants in east Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area on Monday night, police said.
“The incident occurred when the victim — Ramesh Katiyal — was returning to his residence in the Soorajmal Vihar area with his brother Suresh,” said a senior police officer from the investigation team.
According to police, Ramesh, who owns a fodder business near the Ghadoli dairy, was waylaid by the assailants, who shot at him after snatching Suresh’s gold chain.
“Ramesh and Suresh were barely a few metres away from their house at Soorajmal Vihar, when some unidentified persons intercepted them. One of them fired at Ramesh while another snatched a gold chain from Suresh’s neck and fled the spot,” the officer said.
According to police, Suresh immediately raised an alarm and informed the police.
A PCR van rushed Ramesh, who was profusely bleeding, to the adjacent Max Hospital , where he is recovering.
“Ramesh’s condition is said to be stable,” the officer said. Ramesh sustained a bullet injury on his ribs.
“A case, including a charge of attempt to murder, has been filed against unknown persons in this regard, at the Vivek
Vihar police station,” the official said.
Although the victim’s family has been denying enmity with anyone, police suspect murder might had been the motive behind the attack.
“It seems less likely that Ramesh was shot only to snatch a gold chain. Also, the assailants were not on bikes, indicating that they were well-acquainted with the local topography.”
