The Crime Branch of the Delhi police arrested a businessman for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh from a businessman.

Police said the failed actor was under heavy debt.

Businessman Anupam Arora (25) and his close friend Anil Kumar (24), who acted in some TV serials, were arrested from Madipur Metro on Tuesday.

“They had demanded R5 lakh from a Central Delhi businessman dealing with hardware last week. The extortionists projected themselves as members of an underworld gang of 'Suleiman',” said Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).

“The caller provided the businessman graphic details of his (latter’s) family and business. The calls were made from a mobile phone and various PCOs from places including Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Narela,” Chand added.

Police said the accused also told the businessman to deliver the money in a car and the date was fixed for yesterday near Madipur Metro Parking.

“The police was informed and we gave five packets prepared of Rs 1,000 each on top and bottom. In between the currency notes we kept wads of paper. Anil, who came to collect the money, was arrested from the spot,” Chand said.

His interrogation led to the arrest of Arora from Madipur, Delhi.

Arora was a former employee of the businessman but had left his job two years back. “Arora started a business of mobile phones at Madipur but suffered losses,” Chand said.

“He was aware of the sound financial position of his earlier employer and roped in his friend Kumar, who was his close friend of many years,” Chand added.

Kumar is a freelance photographer but had left Delhi in 2008 for Mumbai to work. He claimed to have worked in a single episode of 'CID', 'Aahat', 'Chanda Ki Adalat', 'Aap Ki Antara' and two episodes of 'Raja Ki Ayegi Barat'.
