Twelve-year-old Manan Mahajan had urged his grandfather to accompany him to a school function where he would get an award. Little did Manan’s grandpa realise that the class VII student would not live to receive it.

To pay off a debt, an aspiring chartered accountant kidnapped and killed Manan on Wednesday night in northwest Delhi’s Rohini area.

Son of a leather exporter, Jeevak Nagpal (20) allegedly killed Manan, a student of Bal Bharati School, after abducting him on Wednesday evening from outside a stationary shop.

According to the police, Nagpal’s family was heavily in debt after his father suffered business losses.

Nagpal first demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from Manan’s property dealer father, his neighbour in Sector 11. In subsequent SMS messages, he escalated the demands to Rs seven crore. Unfortunately, since Rajesh Mahajan was in Chandigarh, he never checked the messages.

Said DCP (outer) Atul Katiyar: “Around 7:00 pm Nagpal invited Manan to sit in his car on the pretext of giving him a joyride. While driving, Nagpal sent the first ransom SMS and then kept on sending messages."

According to the police, Nagpal’s car steering jammed near the Metro Walk shopping mall. “When Manan tried to escape, the accused strangled him,” said Katiyar.

After killing Manan, Nagpal dumped his body in a service lane in Sector-24. Later, he even visited Manan’s family, pretending to help them find him.

Between 7 pm and midnight, the accused sent 10 text messages to Manan’s father.

It was only around 10.30 pm that Mahajan saw these. Police began electronic surveillance of the number.

“The SIM card was registered under a fictitious address. However the number was being operated from Rohini itself. In the morning we were able to zero in on Nagpal who took us where he had dumped the child,” added Katiyar.
