Cab kills 1, injures 11 in Gurgaon

A drunken call centre cab driver rammed his vehicle into a row of cars on MG Road in Gurgaon on Sunday, leaving a bystander dead and injuring eleven others.

There were four women and two children among the injured. Three of the critically injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, while the others have been to taken to various hospitals for treatment.

The police have arrested the driver and confiscated the cab.

Gurgaon Police Commissioner Mohinder Lal said the accident took place at around 6.15 p.m. near Fountain Chowk on MG Road, when the BPO cab, a Tata Indigo, crashed into a number of vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, scooter and cycles.

“The cab driver, identified as Ashok Pahwa, was drunk and his cab hit many vehicles and people waiting at a auto-rickshaw stand. One person died on the spot, while eleven others have been injured. The driver, who belongs to Haridwar, has been
arrested,” Lal said. Sixty-two-year-old Ram Chander died on the spot when the cab hit his scooter.

Jitender Sukhrali, an eyewitness, said that he saw the cab passing his car at a very high speed. “I saw this cab hitting a cyclist first near the city police station.

It then crashed into two auto-rickshaws full of passengers toppling them. As I chased the car I saw that it had hit a scooterist, who died on the spot,” Sukhrali said.
