CAG blames NDA govt

Highlight Story

The Comptroller and Auditor General has blamed NDA government for allowing the Suresh Kalmadi-led Indian Olympic Association to bid for the Commonwealth Games and underwriting the government's support for the bid, suggesting the cabinet note put up for the government's approval in 2003 had manipulated facts and played into the IOA's hands.

The CAG's findings echo sports minister Ajay Maken who told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the NDA government had not scrutinised and verified claims made by the IOA in 2003.

The report said the sports ministry sought prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's approval to allow IOA to bid for the Games and underwrite the
government's support in May 2003, without even obtaining the actual bid document of the IOA.
