The prevalent law and order situation of the city was in focus in the Assembly on Thursday with Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members criticising the government for failing to check crime and not taking up the issue of bringing the Delhi Police under it with the home ministry.

The government, which had taken several pot shots at the police after the December 16 gang rape, surprisingly however, sprung to the defence of the force with Health Minister AK Walia rattling figures.

Walia claimed that the crime rate in the city was much lower than that of BJP-ruled states.

“During 2011, only 543 cases of murders were registered in Delhi in comparison to 2511, 3198, 1126 and 1110, respectively, in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh,” he said.
