The primary school in Baprola has only one staircase like many government-run schools in the Capital, one of the richest cities in the country.

Some classrooms in the ground floor of the school in Baprola do not even have desks and chairs for students. They sit on mats spread on the floor.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which runs the school, blamed it on the Delhi government.

“The state government is supposed to give Rs 350 crore. They have released a mere Rs 65 crore which is grossly insufficient,” said Deep Mathur, director, press and information, MCD. “We can’t create new buildings for all the schools without the funds.”

Some 250-odd schools under the MCD are between 35 and 40 years old and in need of repair. They lack basic facilities like adequate number of classrooms, toilet blocks, computer rooms, etc.

“These schools are old. So, there is a shortage of space and we have not been able to dedicate rooms for computer education,” said Prithvi Raj Sawhney, chairman of the education committee of MCD. “There is a need to modernise the buildings, but without funds we can’t do anything.”

The civic agency said it has purchased 70,000 new desk-cum-chairs for its senior classes, but they are yet to be delivered to the schools.

About 1.5 lakh students studying in government primary schools still don’t have desks and chairs.

Sawhney said the new desks have not been delivered because the samples were not cleared.

Reacting to the allegation that the Delhi government as not released enough funds for the schools, Finance Minister A.K. Walia said: “The Delhi government has given the MCD Rs 2,500 crore (for everything) and extra funds for the Commonwealth Games. These funds are going from our kitty but instead of appreciating it, the MCD is getting into blame game.”
