Can consider welfare scheme for lawyers: Govt

The Centre on Sunday that it would consider any proposal forwarded by the Bar Council of India for a scheme for the benefit of lawyers across the country, including stipend for budding advocates and medical insurance.

“We understand the need. Please deliberate on the issue and frame proposals. We assure you that it will be favourably considered by the government,” Union minister CP Joshi said addressing the golden jubilee celebrations of the BCI.

Supreme Court judge MY Iqbal also said young lawyers needed support. “When young lawyers join the bar they need to be supported by the state. Something in the form of stipend for two to three years till they settle down as an advocate,” said he. The comments from Joshi came in response to the remark by BCI chairman Manan Kumar Mishra that lawyers remained a neglected lot.
