The 50-year-old wife of an independent candidate contesting the coming MCD elections was shot at, allegedly by her landlord after an argument over disconnecting electricity supply.
The incident took place around 5.30pm on Wednesday in Budh Vihar, Phase II in outer Delhi. The victim's son, Gurvinder, also suffered a gunshot wound in his finger after the second bullet fired by the landlord hit him.
According to police, the bullet fired by the landlord hit the abdomen of the victim, identified as Suman Lata. She was immediately rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital where she underwent a surgery.
The condition of the victim was said to be critical. Suman Lata is the wife of SK Upadhyay, who is contesting the MCD elections from Budh Vihar ward number 23 as an independent candidate.
Police have arrested the landlord Sulender Singh, but his brother Ravinder Singh who fired two bullets on Upadhyay's family is on the run. A senior police officer said Upadhyay lives with his family on the first floor of Sulender's house.
"The Upadhyay family had an old dispute with their landlord over vacating the flat. The Singhs had disconnected the electricity connection of the flat and this was the main reason behind the argument.
Ravinder fired two bullets-one grazed past Gurvinder's finger while another hit his mother's abdomen," said the officer.
