A speeding car - possibly going at 100kmph - flew off the Defence Colony flyover, overturned and then crashed into a dog shelter early Tuesday. While all the four occupants made a safe "landing", not even a scratch, several dogs sleeping in a kennel were injured.
The shelter caretaker said a puppy was also killed but the police disputed the claim.
"A 25-day-old puppy was crushed and 22 dogs were seriously injured," said Uma Menon, the caretaker.
At around 1.30am, a speeding Maruti Swift Dzire coming from Dakshinpuri in south Delhi went off the flyover and crashed into the compound of a dog shelter run by Frendicoes, a non-profit working for animal welfare.
"The men, all in their mid-20s, were going to Nizamuddin (south Delhi) and were under the influence of alcohol," a senior police officer said.
The driver, Sachin, who uses only one name, was speeding and lost control over the vehicle.
"The car ran into the service lane divider, flew off almost 25 feet and then crash-landed into the shelter," the officer, who didn't wish to be identified, said.
The four men, all residents of Dakshinpuri, had a miraculous escape. They were still rushed to Aiims - for alcohol test, which came positive for all of them.
Menon claimed losses worth Rs 6 lakh as a generator and some other things were damaged, but she didn't mention anything about the dogs, the police said.
