Three people, including a nine-year-old boy, were killed after the Hyundai Verna car they were travelling in rammed a stationary truck in northwest Delhi's Swaroop Nagar on Wednesday. Three others, all members of the same family, were injured in the incident.

Sources said the accident took place around 5am on National Highway-1 when the family was returning to Faridabad from Chandigarh after attending a wedding.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the car might have dozed off on the wheel and hence could not notice the stationary truck on the road. The car was also speeding when the incident took place.

The police identified the dead as Vedant, his mother Ruchika, 35, and grandmother, Pushpa. Three others - Vedant's father Roshan Babu, 40, Roshan's sister-in-law Reena, 32, and her seven-year-old son Aryan - were injured in the incident.

The condition of Roshan, who is a chemical engineer and was driving the car, is stated to be critical.

The family lived in Sector-7 of Faridabad, police claimed, with Vedant studying in Class IV of a private school.

According to an officer probing the case, the speeding car was headed towards Swaroop Nagar on NH 1 from outer Delhi side when it rammed the truck loaded with bricks.

The driver of the truck had parked the vehicle on the left side of the road as there was some fault in one of its wheels.

"The impact of the crash was so powerful that the car was badly mangled. Ruchika, who was sitting in the front, and her mother Pushpa suffered multiple injuries and died on the spot," said the police officer.

The other injured, the officer said, were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where Vedant was pronounced dead on arrival. Reena and Aryan were discharged after first aid, with Roshan being referred to a private hospital.

A case in connection with the accident was registered at the Swaroop Nagar police station and police have seized the truck.

Efforts are on to nab the driver who fled the scene after the accident.
