The night shelter could not accommodate them and the footpath proved too dangerous.
Three persons were injured when a Honda City car, driven allegedly by an inebriated person, ran over them in Inder Puri in South Delhi in the early hours on Monday.
Police said the accident occurred at 2 am near Pusa Road roundabout.
“A drunk businessman allegedly ran over a 20-year-old woman Jyoti and her two daughters, including a 2-month-old baby. All of them were injured,” said a senior police officer.
The victims where sleeping on the pavement.
“The night shelter was overcrowded and they had no other place to stay,” said the officer.
The victims were Jyoti and her two daughters Sarita (2 months) and Neelam (5).
Police said the occupants of the car, Amit Singh (24) and Robert (25), residents of Old Rajinder Nagar, were returning home from Karol Bagh.
“They were coming from a party and were allegedly drunk. Amit was driving the car and lost control over the vehicle,” said a police official.
The officer said the car first hit a wall and then crashed into the pavement injuring the three victims.
“The victims were taken to Lady Harding Hospital from where they were discharged after being administered first aid,” the officer said.
Police said a case under section 304A was registered at Inder Puri Police Station and Singh was taken into custody.
He was later released on bail.
Police have also confiscated the car.
