The Delhi high court-ordered feasibility study of the 5.8km Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand by Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) has found that most car and autorickshaw users are unhappy with the project.
The interim report submitted by the CRRI before the court said: “Majority of motor users felt the situation is bad as compared to without the BRT earlier. But bus users felt their situation has improved.”
On March 15, HC had questioned the government’s claims that BRT users found the road efficient. “Are you sure? Should we order an opinion poll?” the court had asked, making it clear that it would not mind scrapping the project if the CRRI report was adverse. The HC was hearing a PIL, seeking either the scrapping of the project or allowing three- and four-wheelers to ply on lanes demarcated for buses. But CRRI said it was only an interim report. The court has given the expert body six more weeks to submit the final report.
“Overall rating before BRT was between average and good. After BRT’s introduction, ratings have fallen between bad and average. But the overall performance of BRT should be assessed,” the report said.
The court slammed the petitioner in the case, colonel (retd) BB Sharan for demolishing dividers at three points on the stretch. “Who gave you the right to remove the dividers? You cannot take steps at your level. You may have raised certain issues and we have taken note of it. You are not supposed to behave like a superboss,” the bench said.
The transport department has lodged a complaint against Sharan at the Ambedkar Nagar police station in this regard. “We have only given you the right to place whatever data you have in favour of scrapping the project before the CRRI... Please do not do anything more than that,” the court told Sharan.
The PIL filed by NGO Nyay Bhoomi pointed out that the BRT was not practical for a city which has just 23,000 buses and 73 lakh other vehicles.
