The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will examine railway ministry’s records on appointments made and tenders issued by the railway board over the last four years to establish the authenticity of the 1,000–odd telephonic intercepts made by the agency.

This will include the decisions taken during Mamata’s tenure as rail minister too. Bansal is set to be questioned soon to verify the allegations against him.

“In the 1,000-odd telephonic intercepts made by our special unit, which led to the cracking of the bribery conspiracy, there were several references made to suspected irregularities connected to tenders and appointments effected by the railway board in recent years,” said a CBI source.

The CBI is currently examining files related to the promotion of Mahesh Kumar as railway board member (staff) and the allegedly “highly irregular” decision to hold the additional charge of general manager, western railway. The agency will examine senior board officials soon, said the source.
