Closed circuit television cameras came to the rescue to Delhi University authorities when a fight broke out outside the office of the Dean of Students Welfare on Tuesday.

The incident, which happened in the wake of the upcoming student union elections, was recorded in the CCTV footage through which the offenders were identified.

According to sources, a fight broke out between students of different parties when one group snatched the ID-Card and bank draft of a nominee trying to enter the office. Tuesday was the last day to submit the draft for nomination.

“The incident happened during the submission of draft. One student was trying to enter the office when a group of students tried to snatch her I Card. Those involved were hooligans who used to hang around the campus,” said Usha Rao, chief election officer, DUSU elections.

DU authorities also held a meeting with the police where they discussed ways to beef up the security during the elections.

“We will have more police presence in the campus in the run-up to the polls. We already have CCTV cameras in the campus. They proved quite useful in this case. We are very concerned about the safety on campus, especially that of women, and are making sure that nothing untoward happens,” Rao said. DUSU elections will be held on September 9. The name of nominees will be made public on Wednesday.
