A 27-year-old woman was killed after being injured by a misfired celebratory shot at a family function in southwest Delhi on Friday night, police said. “The victim, Amita Dahiya, was at a family function with her husband Deepak at a relative’s residence in Najafgarh when the incident occurred,” said a senior police officer.
Police said they suspected the victim's brother-in-law — who is absconding since the incident — for her death. “Some of the family members were firing celebratory shots to celebrate the occasion. One of the shots, reportedly fired by her husband’s cousin, ended up hitting her. She collapsed immediately,” the officer said.
Police said Amita was rushed to the adjacent Lifeline Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
“This is a planned attack on her because she didn’t bring enough dowry to her in-laws’ home. They had been harassing for the last four months she had been married. This is how they cleared the way for another woman to enter their son’s life,” said Sangita Dabas, one of the victim’s family members. Police said they were zeroing in on the accused and were confident that he would be nabbed soon.
“We cannot disclose the suspect's identity yet. Further details can be revealed only when he is questioned. A case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (murder) has been registered. Investigations are on,” the officer added.
