A grand plan to set up the state-of-the-art mega film studio-cum-production centre in Delhi is being firmed up, a senior information and broadcasting ministry official told HT.

“The aim is to make it north India's film production hub for filmmakers, documentary filmmakers and TV serial makers, who now have to go to Mumbai or Hyderabad to make a film," said the official, who did not want to be identified.

“This production centre will also figure as one of the proposed schemes of the I&B ministry for the 12th five-year plan.”

The ministry has zeroed in on two sites in Delhi — at Siri Fort in south Delhi and Kingsway Camp in north Delhi . The production centre will have outdoor and indoor sites and will cater Doordarshan and private sector.

“Besides generating secondary and tertiary employment opportunities, the film centre will also house a training facility which will be like a feedstock for the much-needed human resource requirements," the official said.

There are huge employment issues in Prasar Bharati, which is understaffed by about 14,000-15,000 vacancies.

Recently, the Group of Ministers had given the approval for recruiting people for 3,452 posts which are considered essential service posts.

“While Doordarshan's needs would assume priority and will be given a niche space of its own, the centre will offer a much cheaper alternative to the private sector for its various needs.”

“The cost structure is yet to be finalised. At this point of time, we are looking at various models including the private-public-partnership for one."

"The plan will be implemented on our own and industrial and consulting experts will be brought in with the best of equipment, acoustics, etc.”
