The Centre on Wednesday ordered a CBI probe into murder of IPS officer Narendra Kumar who was killed by a tractor-trolley carrying illegally mined stones in Madhya Pradesh.

A similar recommendation to seek a CBI probe into the death of another IPS officer Rahul Sharma is also expected from the Chhattisgarh government.

Earlier in the day, chief minister Raman Singh told the Chhattisgarh assembly that the state had decided to ask for a CBI inquiry into Sharma's death to figure what drove him to commit suicide.

A 2002-batch IPS officer, Sharma (37) was a dynamic police officer who had served in the heart of the naxal hotbed, Dantewada, before moving to relatively peaceful Raigard and Bilaspur districts.

The Madhya Pradesh government had sent a formal request recommending a CBI probe at the insistence of Narendra Kumar's family.

MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had earlier announced a judicial inquiry into Kumar's death around the same time when senior state officials described the incident as an accident, not a murder.

Criticism from the public and Kumar's family at this approach nudged the state to start the probe with an open mind. Kumar’s wife, an IAS officer, spoke about how her husband talked of lack of cooperation from local police who did not act against the mining mafia on his instructions.
