Delhi might soon turn into a city where you do not have to haggle for parking space nor wait at every traffic signal along a stretch or be stuck in incessant traffic snarls.
A high-powered committee under the Union ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) has submitted a list of recommendations to decongest traffic in the city.
The committee passed the recommendations after HT carried two series, one in 2014 and the other in 2016, highlighting the congestion problem in the city .
The panel has in its final report come up with a Rs 20,000-crore plan that stresses on improving public transport — particularly buses — to wean people away from owning cars.
The strategy proposed by the ministry has laid emphasis on road safety and traffic management through extensive use of intelligent traffic management system (ITMS). The plan also focuses on reorienting road networks to give priority to pedestrians and cyclists. “Intelligent Transport System is suggested to be adopted for surveillance, automatic vehicle location, public information boards, red light cameras and stop line violation detection,” the report read.
Below are some of the key recommendations by the panel:
•Five BRT Corridors:
1)Karawal Nagar- Mori Gate
2)Gazipur NH 24- National Stadium
3)Dilshad Garden Metro Station- Tikri Border
4)Badarpur Border- IGI Airport via Mahipalpur
5)Harsh Vihar- Janak Puri District Centre- Janak Puri D Block
•Parking Management Districts: Connaught Place, Nehru Place, Karol Bagh, Kamla Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Bhikaji Cama Place
•Multi-modal integration: 78 Phase-III Metro stations
In the next five years, multi- modal integration of 129 Phase I and II metro stations has been proposed
•Integrated Passenger Terminals: Sarai kale Khan, Bijwasan, Anand Vihar, Kashmere Gate, Holambi Kalan and Tikri Kalan
•Cycle tracks: Development of 200 kms of cycle tracks and foothpaths has been proposed
•Congestion tax: Effective parking pricing and Congestion Tax key to discourage use of private vehicles
•Use space better: Better use of existing road space, multi-modal integration, better traffic management
•No signal-free corridors: No signal free corridors to ensure safety; focus on junction improvements and traffic dispersal
