Tuesday's afternoon showers brought much happiness to Delhiites but soon the sighs of relief turned into frustration as huge traffic snarls and waterlogging made commuting a whole lot difficult.
Soon after the downpour, major arterial roads were filled with water and by evening the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and NDMC had received 21 complaints. Not cleaning of nearly 1,500 drains in the city by the MCD only added to the woes.
Traffic snarls that started around 2pm saw its effect last till the late evening and roads remained jampacked during evening peak hours. The traffic police's SMS alert also ditched motorists, as subscribers didn't get messages throughout the day.
The traffic police had to turn many signals from the automated mode to manual mode in central, northern and southern Delhi, as the situation worsened. Officegoers in particular faced huge hurdles in areas such as ITO, Rajghat, Asaf Ali Road, Barakhamba Road and Connaught Place while returning from work in the evening.
"Although traffic cops were present to manage traffic, the situation was beyond their control," said Rajiv Singh, a businessman who was stuck in a jam near Mandi House for over an hour.
Special commissioner of police (traffic) BS Bassi, however, said the rain did not cause breakdown of signals. "In many places we had to run them in the manual mode in a bid to reduce traffic congestions," he said.
Traffic movement was also affected in Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Hauz Khas, Ashram Chowk, among others. Slow traffic was also reported from low-lying areas of Model Town, Timarpur, and Kingsway Camp in north Delhi, leading to traffic jam that stretched up to Ring Road till late evening.
"We have ensured presence of traffic cops at each intersection and also regulate it manually in case the traffic signals fail," said a senior traffic police officer. Pedestrians also had a harrowing time as all subways in Connaught Place were flooded.
With increasing vehicular pressure on Mathura Road, the jam also stretched on the Delhi- Noida route via DND Flyover.
