Chargesheet against Punjab speaker

The CBI on Friday chargedsheeted Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Punjab legislative assembly speaker and former state minister for rural development and panchayats, and 14 others for alleged criminal conspiracy, corruption, cheating and forgery while selecting 909 panchayat secretaries from 1997 to 2002.

The chargesheet, submitted in a Patiala special court said,”It was alleged in the complaint (filed by the then ministry director) that the minister (Kahlon), in conspiracy with other accused persons indulged in corruption ... in respect of selection of 909 Panchayat Secretaries .... The investigation revealed that large sums of money changed hands during the selection.”

The case against the 15 accused was filed in June 2002, the Vigilance Bureau in Punjab had also probed the allegations.
