The much-awaited rain not only brought cheer but also the usual chaos, traffic jams and delayed flights on Friday.
Minutes after it began at 6 pm, Arshana (who goes by a single name) and her colleague Vandana Gupta ran out of their office to enjoy the pre-monsoon showers. "Without thinking about the fact that we were in front of our office, I ran outside and got drenched with my friends. Later, we made a dash for the canteen, where we enjoyed piping-hot samosas," Arshana said.
The city received 15.66 mm of rainfall between 6 pm and 8.30 pm.
But not unexpectedly, the rain led to waterlogging, leading to traffic jams and trouble for those on the road.
"It took me almost two hours to reach my house in Patparganj from Connaught Place – a distance I usually cover in less than half an hour. Surprisingly, the traffic signals were working, but the sheer number of cars on the road resulted was causing congestion," said Sushweta Ghoshal.
And it was not just road commuters, but even those travelling in the Delhi Metro, who faced delays. The rain also delayed over 50 flights and led to diversion of six others.
Snarls were witnessed on Ring Road, ITO, Nizamuddin, Nigam Bodh Ghat, Baraf Khana, Azad Market, Kishen Ganj, Dhaula Kuan and even Connaught Place.
