China on Thursday thanked India for ensuring that the BRICS summit went off without a hitch, but blamed the Dalai Lama for the death of Jamphel Yeshi, who immolated himself to protest the visit of the Chinese President.

“The Dalai Lama and so-called pro-independence elements are trying to push extreme and radical views and are glorifying extreme positions,” Luo Zhaohui, an official at the Chinese foreign ministry, said.

“The Chinese appreciate the concrete and effective measures implemented by the Indian government in overcoming the disruption,” he said. The Chinese official added that self-immolation goes against “Buddhist traditions”.
