Traffic chaos on Delhi’s busy roads can be considerably reduced by repairing road surfaces at 98 intersections. At least, the Delhi traffic police believes so.

The traffic police have now decided to write to the road-owning agencies, asking them to take up repair work on a priority basis. “If these roads are not repaired immediately, motorists would suffer more due to water-logging during monsoon,” said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

The list of 98 damaged stretches was prepared following a recent survey conducted by Delhi traffic police. During the survey, the traffic police found that normal flow of traffic gets badly affected at these points.

Some of the busy intersections include Nehru Bazar Chowk near Panchkuian Road, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg near Metro pillar number 41, Ring Road Bypass under Hanuman Setu, under Palam flyover and Faiz Road junction among others. Besides, the list includes several intersections on Wazirabad Road, Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, Indraprastha Marg, Qutub Road and Rani Jhanshi Road, said traffic police.

They said of the identified stretches, 70 are on roads under PWD, five on NDMC roads, 15 on roads under the three municipalities and some under DDA and other agencies.

“Some of these roads have been damaged for a long time and badly need repair. Some of them are in a dangerous condition and often cause accidents,” said a senior traffic police officer.

Due to the bad condition of roads, traffic flow during morning and evening peak hours drastically slows down and cause piling of vehicles on roads leading to jams on connected roads as a ripple effect, said traffic police.

For the past several years, traffic police have been sending list of damaged roads to the road owning agencies, asking them to repair them.
