Soon, a special fund would be introduced by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to mitigate effects of climate change.
The civic body would take up this matter with Lt. Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
“Currently in the MCD Budget, there are hardly any funds earmarked for dealing with the climate change, an issue which needs due priority. We are planning to get a separate head for funds for this purpose,” said Mayor Kanwar Sen.
Sen also said the civic body would initiate programmes in collaboration with the Delhi government to mitigate the effect of climate.
“I will be taking up this issue with the municipal commissioner to formulate five yearly and ten yearly plans based on targets for combating climate change,” said Sen.
Sen further said that the civic body would initiate new projects that would be environment friendly and will help earn revenue through trading carbon credits and improve the environment.
The civic body has also received a proposal from the Mayor of Seoul to help Delhi restore river Yamuna to its original healthy state.
Sen said they have expressed their willingness to help Delhi clean the Yamuna which is the lifeline of Delhi.
“The river Han in Seoul was also having similar problems as river Yamuna is facing today,” Sen said.
“The city of Seoul undertook the project for restoration of river involving multipronged strategy and now due to sustained efforts, they have been able to restore river Han totally.”
