A major fire broke out in a petrol pump in Faridabad's Sector 16 market in the wee hours of Thursday, causing huge damage to the petrol pump and some vehicles, including a petrol tanker.
However, there were no reports of any casualtydue to the fire.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 3 am on Thursday when a petrol tanker was filling the underground tank of the Hindustan Petroleum-run petrol pump close to the Sector-16 market.
"The tanker was filling the pump's underground tank, when suddenly sparking was noticed and the tanker caught fire," said Vikas Sharma, an eyewitness.
Although three fire-tenders rushed to the spot, it took almost three hours for the fire-service men to completely douse the fire.
The petrol pump, being close to Sector-16 market could have caused a lot of damage, had the fire spread.
"Three fire tenders from Sec 15, Sec 31 and Ballabgarh rushed to the spot at 3.20 a.m. and returned around 5.30 am, after dousing the fire," said Ram Mehar, a fireman.
Three machines at the pump were completely gutted, whereas a tanker and a Maruti 800 suffered extensive damage.
"We have set up a team of officers to probe the fire incident. They have gone to the site. Once they return, I will be in a position to comment on the cause of the fire and the losses suffered," Anil Khurana, Deputy General Manager (Operation), Hindustan Petroleum told HT.
