Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s remark in the Delhi assembly on rape drew heavy criticism from the Opposition on Friday.

Describing her government’s achievements for the past 15 years, Dikshit said that one gang rape had taken place in December last year and that had led to the launch of the women’s helpline number 181.

“We had one rape case and a helpline 181 was established immediately within a week so that all women who feel insecure can contact us and the police for help. It is one-of-its-kind in India,” said Dikshit.

She said that it was BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh that had earned the tag of being the ‘rape capital’ of the country.

Dikshit said that her government was confident of winning the elections again.

The Opposition cornered her on her ‘one rape’ comment and said it reflected her ‘insensitivity’ towards women.

Leader of opposition VK Malhotra termed her comments as a ‘pack of lies’ and criticised her for making ‘such irresponsible’ remarks. “How can she say only one rape had taken place in Delhi when so many such cases have been reported every day? Has she forgotten the rape of a five-year-old in April,” he said.

The BJP legislators were not present in the House when Dikshit made the comment as they had been suspended for creating ruckus while protesting Speaker Yoganand Shastri’s decision to allow Dikshit to make a suo motu statement on the last day of the fourth assembly.

“How can you make such a comment when the city reported so many rape cases? On the one hand Dikshit says her daughter does not feel safe in Delhi and on the other she says only one rape has taken place,” said Malhotra.

As per official figures, 810 cases of rape have been reported in Delhi from December 16 last year -- when the brutal rape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student shook the country - till June this year.
