A core group meeting of the Congress Party met in New Delhi on Saturday evening to discuss several issues of national import, including the coal scam.
Media reports said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and party chief Sonia Gandhi were among those who attended the meeting.
This is the first meeting of the Congress Core Group meeting in a fortnight.
The coal scam is finding a mention in media again after a report in the Indian Express suggested alleged government interference in CBI investigations and the BJP demanding an SIT probe into it.
The Indian Express report claimed that Union law and justice minister Ashwani Kumar had summoned the CBI chief and reportedly told him to tone down the report.
The Congress Party, however, rejected the charge and also ruled out the possibility of Kumar resigning from office.
Party spokesman Rashid Alvi said on Saturday, "There is no question of resignation of law minister Ashwani Kumar. Supreme Court has already asked CBI to file an affidaviat in this regard. CBI will file its affidavit and truth will come out."
Dismissing suggestions that CBI is being used as a political tool, Alvi said, "CBI is an independent agency."
However, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley described the UPA regime as a "rogue government" that will not allow the CBI to function independently and demanded the constitution of a Special Investigation Team.
He also charged the government with "interference in the administration of justice" by not allowing CBI to acquaint the apex court with the full truth in the case.
