Cold claims one life, Fog disrupts air, rail traffic

It was the coldest day of this season with the maximum dropping to 18.8 degree Celsius, the season's lowest maximum so far, while the minimum was recorded at seven degrees. The day before, the maximum was at 18 degrees and minimum 8.2 degree Celsius.

On Wednesday, the minimum had dropped to the season's coldest of 5.2 degrees, and the subsequent days saw 6.7 and 6.4 degrees respectively.

For the third consecutive day, a thick layer of fog engulfed the city skies till noon sending the air traffic into chaos and leading to a road accident near Rajghat in central Delhi.

Dense fog enveloped the city since the early hours today and the visibility at the Indira Gandhi International airport dropped to near zero, leading to delays, diversions and cancellation of 80 domestic and international flights.

The airport was closed for nearly two hours as visibility fell below 100 metres, officials said.

The humidity was maximum at 100 per cent while the lowest was at 65 per cent.

The weatherman has predicted similar conditions for tomorrow with fog in the morning and temperature oscillating between seven and 19 degree Celsius.

As the minimum temperature dropped to seven degree Celsius this morning, an unknown man was found dead near a Metro pillar in west Delhi's Tilak Nagar with police suspecting that he succumbed to the intense cold.

One person was killed and four others injured when a car collided with a tempo near Rajghat in central Delhi during morning hours when fog had reduced visibility.

According to statistics provided by weather office, the average minimum temperature in Delhi for the month of December is 8.2 degree C and the maximum is 23 degree C.

The lowest-ever minimum temperature for this month is 1.1 degree C recorded on December 26, 1945, while the highest maximum was 29.3 degree C recorded on December 3, 1987.
